In a night full of brutal highlights, the biggest was the crowning of new One FC middleweight champion.
Evolve MMA's Leandro Ataides was shown no mercy by challenger Igor Svirid from Kazakhstan at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang on Friday night. Svirid won the belt in a mere 17 seconds, overwhelming the previously undefeated Brazilian from his first punch.
The 28-year-old was making his promotional debut, and he certainly made an impression on both his opponent (the favourite going into the bout) as well as the fans at the stadium and watching online.
Svirid landed his first punch, a powerhouse of a straight jab that caught Ataides unawares and dropped him. This was followed up by a flurry of punches that sent the Brazilian crashing back to the mat. Referee Yuji Shimada then stopped the match and declared the Kazakh the winner by TKO.
Despite needing to communicate through a translator, the fighter couldn't hide is delight at the result, "I have no words, and now I am the champion. This was for all of the Kazakhstani people."
The other big fight of the night saw Koji Ando (11-3-2) defeat former lightweight title challenger Zorobabel Moreira (7-3) in the third round of arguably the best fight at the Battle of Lions. The Japanese fighter wore Moreira, who was returning to the ring after a two year absence, down with punches before finishing him off with a pair of vicious soccer kicks.
After his victory a bullish Ando stated, "Next time I enter the cage, I want to challenge the champion. And I when I leave the cage, I want the belt."
The longest fight of the night was between Japan's Tatsuya Mizuno (13-10) and Frenchman Brayan Rafiq (16-10-1). The middleweight bout saw Mizuno defeat his opponent by a unanimous decision from the judges. He dominated Rafiq on the mat in the first two rounds, and continued to cow his opponent when the two switched to their feet in the third round.
