Michael McDonald will make his long-awaited return to the octagon in January 2016 after he was added to the UFC 195 fight card.
McDonald (16-3) will take on Masanori Kanehara (25-12-5) at UFC 195 on January 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
McDonald has not competed since his submission loss to Urijah Faber at UFC on Fox 9 in December 2013, having suffered a series of long-term injuries in the last two years.
He is currently ranked number eight on the UFC bantamweight rankings and boast victories over Chris Cariaso, Miguel Torres and Brad Pickett.
Kanehara is a Japanese MMA veteran with notable wins over "Kid" Yamamoto and "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung but lost in a split decision to Rani Yahya in July in what was his most recent bout. His previous fight – his UFC debut – was a unanimous decision victory over Alex Caceres.
The UFC 195 card now includes:
Champ Robbie Lawler v Carlos Condit – for the welterweight title
Andrei Arlovski v Stipe Miocic
Joseph Duffy v Dustin Poirier
Lorenz Larkin v Albert Tumenov
Drew Dober v Erik Koch
Edgar Garcia v Sheldon Westcott
Nina Ansaroff v Justine Kish
Masanori Kanehara v Michael McDonald
