Mayweather returns to top of sports rich list

Former world champion boxer Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather is back on top of Forbes magazine’s 2018 sports rich list after reclaiming the title from Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 41-year-old American’s big payday from last year’s fight with UFC star Conor McGregor saw him become the world’s best paid sports star for the fourth time in seven years, with his 2018 earnings estimated at US$285 million.

Portugal star Ronaldo ($108 million) came in third, behind Barcelona rival Lionel Messi with $111 million.

Despite losing in his fight with Mayweather, MMA star McGregor was a winner as he came in in fourth place with $99 million.

PSG and Brazil star Neymar ($US90 million) was in fifth place.

Also notable was that no women made the top 100 for the first time since 2010.

LeBron James, Roger Federer, Stephen Curry, Matt Ryan and Matthew Stafford (both NFL players) rounded off the top 10.

Kei Nishikori was the highest ranked Asian star in 35th place with total earnings of $34.6 million.

Ronaldo, Mayweather and Tiger Woods, who came in 16th place on the list with 43.3 million – are still the only three to top the best-paid list during the past 18 years.
