A report by a Russian news outlet on Thursday claims Boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather intends to become a Russian citizen.
Russia 24, a state owned news channel, reported that the former pound-for-pound King has many business interests in Russia and wants to get permanent residence.
“I hope to obtain Russian citizenship,” the report quotes the American as saying.
"Today I already had the opportunity to look at the housing that could become my new home in Russia, but everything takes time.”
In 2016, Mayweather opened a gym in Moscow, called the Academy of Boxing and reports suggest he is looking to open another 20 or so all across the nation.
Mayweather has apparently met with Ramzan Kadyrov, head of the Chechen Republic. Kadyrov and Mayweather visited his gym, the Akhmat Fight Club in Grozny, which the boxer was impressed with and eager to get involved.
“Of course I have to plan for the future and will agree with his team and friends,” continued Mayweather.
“But we're going to go back and plan to bring with us a top American boxing coach and the best trainers from the UFC."
