De La Hoya wants Mayweather to fight another opponent

Former boxing superstar Oscar de la Hoya believes Floyd Mayweather should mark his comeback with a fight against Canelo Alvarez or Gennady Golovkin.

The comment comes after reports revealed that negotiations for the superfight between Mayweather and UFC star Conor McGregor have become stagnant.

Canelo and Golovkin square off in the ring for the first time on 16 September and de la Hoya believes the undefeated Mayweather should fight the winner, rather than McGregor.

"Even Floyd, after this fight with Canelo and Golovkin, forget about The Notorious One," the Golden Boy told ESPN.

"Forget about a fighter who has zero experience, who has zero fights, who has zero amateur experience. Forget about that. Mayweather's better than that.
"Mayweather, if you want to fight or have a rematch against Canelo, or a fight against Golovkin, go after them. After Canelo and Golovkin fight, go after the winner."

Mayweather has defeated both de la Hoya and Canelo before, though his majority decision win came in 2013 when Canelo was just 23-years-old.
