Broner jailed for 30 days

Former four-weight world champion Adrien Broner has been jailed for 30 days after turning up late for a court hearing.

According to the presiding judge in Hamilton County, Ohio, Broner appeared "drunk" or "hungover" after arriving three hours late for a hearing into an assault charge stemming from a January incident at a bowling alley.

According to the court transcripts, Judge Robert Ruehlman told Broner that he wouldn't be "ducking this one".

"You don't look well. You look like you have a hangover," said Ruehlman.

"I have been sick all morning," Broner replied. "When I finally got well, I called my lawyer."

"It's not a good excuse," Ruehlman hit back. "He looks like he's drunk or hungover. To coin a little boxing phrase – you're not ducking this one."

Ruehlman held Broner in contempt of court and ordered that he be detained for 30 before standing trial.

Broner previously spent 10 days in prison for violating his probation, shortly after his last professional fight, a victory over Ashley Theophane back in April.
