NBA wrap: Raptors remain undefeated with victory over Timberwolves; Cavaliers still winless

The Raptors remained undefeated Wednesday while the Cavaliers have still yet to pick up their first win of 2018-19.

Toronto star Kawhi Leonard scored 35 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead his team to a 112-105 victory over the Timberwolves. The Raptors controlled the game for most of the second half but Minnesota made a run before Karl-Anthony Towns connected on a shorter jumper to trim its deficit to five with 1:16 to play.

Leonard, however, answered with four straight points to secure the win. Kyle Lowry added 13 points and 10 assists for Toronto.

The Cavaliers, on the other hand, fell to the Nets 102-86 at Quicken Loans Arena. Cleveland shot just 38.2 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from 3-point range.

The Nets knocked down 14 3-pointers and had a balanced attack throughout the victory. Nine players scored at least eight points and six reached double-figures.

The loss was Cleveland’s fourth straight to open the season.

Studs of the night

Cameron Payne tied a Bulls record with seven second-half 3-pointers in their 112-110 win over the Hornets. He finished with 21 points.

Hassan Whiteside tallied 22 points and 14 rebounds in the Heat’s 110-87 victory over the Knicks.

Duds of the night

Pau Gasol was a minus-24 and went 2 for 7 from the field in the Spurs’ 116-96 loss to the Pacers.

Mavericks guard J.J. Barea was held to three points on 1-of-10 shooting in his team’s 111-104 loss to the Hawks.

Highlight

Stephen Curry made bucket, after bucket, after bucket in the first quarter in the Warriors’ matchup with the Wizards. He finished Golden State’s 144-122 win with 11 3-pointers and 51 points.

What’s next

Celtics (2-2) at Thunder (0-3) —  Oklahoma City is looking to pick up its first win of the season when it hosts Boston on Thursday. The Celtics were expected to be one of the best teams in the NBA in 2018-19 but have struggled at times in their first four games. They enter the matchup with the Thunder coming off a surprising loss to the Magic.
