THERE was strong curiosity on the part of Hans Thiele while he was watching the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
Watching the games on television, the former PBA player was amazed at the turnout and the warm reception being given by fans as the fastest growing regional basketball league moved from the one place to another from different cities, towns and provinces.
His plans of going to Dubai along with his wife had to be aborted when opportunity to play for the Bulacan Kuyas was presented to him.
“Dapat magbi-base na kami sa Dubai eh,” Thiele told FOX Sports Philippines in an exclusive interview. “Masaya kasi nga sabi ni misis, maglaro muna ako. Sobrang sarap manood, ang daming tao. Yung misis ko, taga-Bulacan. Big deal para sa kanila yung basketball doon eh. May mga kumukuha sa aking teams, pero pinili ko Bulacan kasi taga-doon nga misis ko.”
Thiele played for Barako Bull during his early part of his career, then moved to Kia where he became a key player of the expansion squad. He encountered rough situations there in his last PBA squad as management failed to oblige on its contractual obligations and the 6-foot-4 frontliner decided to leave the pro league right there and then.
He last saw action in the PBA D-League last year. But after failing to get much success there, Thiele and his wife were already planning of moving to Dubai.
But as fate would have it, the 34-year-old Thiele was included in the roster at the last minute.
“Medyo nakakabalik na ako (conditioning-wise), kasi ngalaro na ako ng Alab, tapos Flying V (D-League), tapos nag-Dubai ako five months, then nung nanganak misis ko, dito muna kami. Sabi niya magandang pagkakataon, subukan ko ulit,” added Thiele.
Thiele will be the fifth ex-pro going to play for the Kuyas. Other ex-pros seeing action for the squad are James Martinez, Chris Baluyot, Jason Melano and Jeric Cañada.
