In lieu of the emergency meeting held a few days ago, several talking points have been brought up: from Kiefer Ravena’s suspension to the upcoming Asian Games to be held in Indonesia starting August 18.
With the Indonesian Asiad just around the corner, the PBA board of governors are left scrambling in forming a team who would be able to commit and participate in the said international event, especially due to the ongoing PBA schedule.
This problem could have been addressed had Gilas mainstays like Kiefer Ravena and Kevin Alas are to be brought aboard. However, Ravena was meted out an 18-month suspension due to violation of the FIBA’s anti-doping policy, and Kevin Alas is sidelined indefinitely due to a knee injury suffered last Philippine Cup.
However, the board has decided to include naturalized reinforcement Andray Blatche, key members from Talk N’ Text, and several Alaska players in the upcoming Asiad, similar to the 1994 line-up where players from SMB and several reinforcements were tapped to represent the country in the Hiroshima Asian Games.
Calvin Abueva, Jayson Castro, Carl Bryan Cruz, RR Pogoy, Terrence Romeo, Troy Rosario, Kelly Williams are likely to suit up again for the national team. Jericho Cruz, RR Garcia, and Don Trollano are in the mix as well given they’re part of TNT’s core.
POC president Ricky Vargas and SBP chief Al Panlilio will have their hands full in filling in the national roster for the next few weeks.
The 2018 Asian Games was originally slated in Hanoi, Vietnam, where they won the bidding wars against places like Surabaya and Dubai. However, due to financial constraints and the lack of infrastructure, the board decided to change its venue to cities in Indonesia like Jakarta and Palembang.
Basketball events will be held at the Gelora Bung Karno Sport Complex in Jakarta.
