Tournament favorite TIP routs BSU to grab early lead in UCBL

Technological Institute of the Philippines overpowered Bulacan State University, 103-83 to seize the early lead, while Olivarez College rebounded with a 95-77 rout of Colegio de San Lorenzo in the UCBL  tournament Thursday at the Olivarez Sports Center.

Jorey Napoles and John Enriquez fired 15 points apiece while Ikee Akpuru had 12 points and 11 rebounds to help the Engineers notch their second straight win in as many outings.

Despite the impressive start, TIP coach Potit de Vera stressed the need for his players to improve in time for their big showdown with Centro Escolar University – the tournament’s top favorite.

“We have a long way to go.  We are trying to get better, especially in cohesion and toughness. More of the mental aspects,” said De Vera, whose team was organized only in mid-June.

The Engineers also overcame Dominick Fajardo’s 40-point, 11-rebound outing for the Malolos-based Gold Gear, who dropped to 1-1.

Reserves Pruvil Bermudez and Lordy Geronimo combined for 15 points in the Sea Lions’ 33-point third quarter explosion to shatter a 43-43 halftime count and surge to a 76-58 advantage.

The win enabled the Olivarez Sea Lions to soothe the pain after absorbing a 96-91 loss to Bulacan State.
