KUALA LUMPUR— China-Guangzhou Securities completed a five-game sweep of the 2016 Seri Mutiara Champions Cup after dethroning Malaysia NS Matrix, 79-61 in the Finals on Sunday at the MABA Stadium.
Iranian import Nikkhah Bahrami presided over China’s dominant performance in the championship round, finishing with 16 points and six rebounds as Guangzhou reasserted its mastery over the host squad, which it blasted in the preliminary round, 100-56 on Friday.
American playmaker Ryan Boatright came off the bench to provide 16 points, along with six rebounds, three steals and two assists for Guangzhou, which is preparing for the 2016-17 Chinese Basketball Association season next month.
Avery Scharer led the Matrix with 23 points and eight rebounds, taking much of the scoring load as American import Darius Rice was limited to just 17 minutes due to a bad back.
The 6-10 Rice, who torched Blackwater with 46 points on opening day, finished with just four points on 0-of-8 shooting from the field.
Meantime, Malaysia Selection took third place after routing Croatia-Old Star Zagreb, 89-77.
Cameroonian import Chris Kuete led the Malaysians, mentored by former University of San Carlos coach Brit Reroma with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
American imports Chris Charles and Dior Lowhorn combined for 31 points and 14 rebounds, while Filipino playmaker Jeric Canada had 13 points, eight assists and four rebounds.
Blackwater earlier captured fifth place after beating Chinese Taipei-Dacin Tigers, 80-71 behind Carlo Lastimosa’s 20 points and Raymond Aguilar’s 17. – Richard Dy
