ANTIPOLO–Jayson Castro dropped a season-high 42 points as TNT rolled past Phoenix, 136-124 to advance to the PBA Governors Cup semifinals on Saturday night at the Ynares Center.
The TNT combo guard laced his explosive effort with five triples, to go along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals, leading the Katropa to the semis for the first time in the last four conferences.
Castro’s 42-point effort was two shy of his career-high, which he registered in TNT’s 116-108 defeat to Rain or Shine on April 17, 2015 during Game Two of the Commissioner’s Cup Finals.
TNT will meet sister team Meralco in the best-of-five semifinal series. The Bolts advanced to the semis earlier after smothering Mahindra Enforcer, 105-82.
Five other TNT locals logged in 12 points or more, underscoring the Katropa’s seriousness to win a league championship.
Asian import Michel Madanly came off the bench to fire 17, while Ranidel de Ocampo and Ryan Reyes chipped in 16 apiece, combining for six three-pointers.
The Fuel Masters, as expected, drew another big effort from import Eugene Phelps, who banged 39 points and hauled down 17 rebounds.
But TNT’s bench depth was just too much for Phoenix to handle. – John Bryan Ulanday
