Kiefer Ravena and Joseph Yeo took turns hitting the key baskets down the stretch as Mighty Sports survived the fighting Singapore Slingers, 72-70 to advance to the Merlion Cup on Saturday at the OCBC Arena in Singapore.
The six-foot Ravena bravely scored against Singapore’s bigger defenders inside to for the go-ahead basket with 1:28 to go in the game.
Moments later, Yeo, using Hamady N’Diyae’s pick, buried the top-of-the-eye three-pointer to give Mighty Sports a 72-68 lead.
Although Singapore managed to make two foul shots and got a big break when Mighty Sports American import Dewarick Spencer turned the ball over, the Slingers failed to send the game into overtime when Pinoy reinforcement was whistled for double dribble with 0.3 second left.
Spencer led Mighty Sports with 17 points.
The Philippine representative faces powerhouse the Jimmer Fredette-reinforced-Shanghai Sharks in the Finals on Sunday to dispute the Merclio Cup title in a battle of unbeaten teams. – John Bryan Ulanday
