Perlas Pilipinas maintained its composure amid host Malaysia’s searing fourth quarter rally to register a pulse-pounding 77-73 win, virtually winning the gold medal in the 2016 SEABA Women’s championships on Saturday in Malacca, Malaysia.
The victory left Philippine national women’s team as the lone undefeated squad with its 5-0 record, while Malaysia fell to 3-1.
The Filipinas can complete the sweep of the regional basketball tournament for women with a victory against Thailand on Sunday and officially clinch the country’s first SEABA title since 2010.
For a while, the national side mentored by Patrick Aquino appeared headed for an easy win. But the Malaysians just wouldn’t roll and die after outscoring the Filipinas, 22-6 the rest of the way.
Fortunately, time wasn’t on Malaysia’s side as Perlas Pilipinas managed to hung tough for the win.
Veteran Allana Lim paced the gutsy Filipinas with 16 points, while Afril Bernardino added 14, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Ambie Almazan also came up with with a double-double effort of 10 points and 12 boards. – John Bryan Ulanday
