Fil-Am wingman Davon Potts and veteran guard Babes Bolick came through with clutch buckets as host San Beda outlasted Perpetual Help, 85-72 to claim the second twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four round of the 92nd NCAA seniors basketball tourney on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan City.
Dragged into a tight contest that’s expected by many, the Red Lions refused to wilt under immense pressure as Potts and Bolick took turns in delivering the big blows in a jarring 17-3 finishing kick that brought the taller Altas down to their knees.
The victory was the Red Lions’ 13th overall in 17 matches, enabling them to secure the second and final semis incentive after pace-setting Arellano U (14-3).
“That’s the goal for every team—get that twice-to-beat. That’s a luxury,” beamed San Beda coach Jamike Jarin, who got another balanced offensive attack from the Red Lions.
While gunner AC Soberano banged in a team-high 18 points, eight of them in the final frame, Potts and Bolick preserved their brilliance by combining for the team’s next 11 markers that allowed San Beda to take a 79-72 lead with 1:32 left to play.
“We were patient with our offense,” added Jarin, who also commended skipper Dan Sara for providing the needed stability.
Prized import Bright Akhuetie dominated anew with 29 points and 18 rebounds on top of three assists and a pair of blocks, but he and his Perpetual Help teammates visibly ran out of steam in the crunch, leading to the Altas’ sixth loss in 17 matches, dropping into a tie with Mapua. – Jerome Lagunzad
