Perlas Pilipinas smashes Singapore, opens SEABA women’s cage title bid in high gear

Perlas Pilipinas rode on a huge second-quarter surge as the national women’s team routed Singapore, 69-43 to kick off its 2016 SEABA women’s basketball title bid on a high note on Tuesday in Malacca, Malaysia.

The Filipinas, mentored by coach Patrick Aquino, trailed, 0-6 in the early stages of the game, before an unforgiving defense saw them unload 19 straight points to quickly turn the tables against their foes.

France Mae Cabinbin, a former Lyceum Lady Pirate and WNCAA two-time MVP, spearheaded the Filipinas’ offensive with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.

The women’s national team, which last won the regional championship in 2010, played without long-time national team member Ewon Arayi, who is still recovering from dengue.

Meanwhile, Jia Min Lim paced the Singaporeans with 15 markers and five steals.
