The Office of the Commissioner handed out a total of Php69,500 on 10 players and a coach during the last four game days of the PBA Governors Cup.
Phoenix young slotman Norbert Torres bore the brunt of the fine as his original flagrant foul penalty 1 in the Fuel Masters’ 106-93 win over Star was elevated to flagrant foul 2. The former La Salle big man stepped on the landing spot of Star counterpart Ian Sangalang, who eventually sprained his ankle during that play.
The 6-foot-6 Torres was assessed Php20,000, on top of a one-game suspension as well.
Torres, the eighth overall pick in last year’s PBA Draft, won’t see action Wednesday when the Fuel Masters clash with Blackwater Elite in a crucial stint that has playoff repercussions.
Imports Jason Forte of Rain or Shine and Allen Durham of Meralco, along with TNT rookie guard Kris Rosales were also assessed separate Php7,500 fine for incurring flagrant foul penalty 1 during their respective games last week.
Other players who were slapped with fines include TNT rookie forward Troy Rosario (Php5,000) for bumping San Miguel import Mike Singletary airborne during the Katropa’s 105-85 demolition of the Beermen in Batangas City.
Mahindra import James White and Phoenix big man Prince Caperal were also slapped Php5,000 fines each.
Meralco coach Norman Black was fined Php3,000 for addressing the Commissioner, and an additional Php2,000 for a technical foul he got due to continuous complaining.
Other players, who were fined include Phoenix import Eugene Phelps (Php3,000 for flopping and Php1,000 for technical foul), Ronjay Buenafe Php1,000 (resentment to a call), while SMB guard Ronald Tubid was slapped Php2,000 for disrespecting lady referee Edith Botecario (applauding in a sarcastic manner). – Jason Mercene
