Maverick Ahanmisi proud big bro as Jerrick catches fire in UAAP debut

Adamson rookie Jerrick Ahanmisi just turned heads in his debut for the UAAP but big brother Maverick wasn’t surprised.

The younger Ahanmisi broke the record for most points of a rookie after exploding for 28 points in the Falcons’ torching of UP Fighting Maroons in the UAAP Season 79 opener, Sunday afternoon at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

For Maverick, who was at the Mall of Asia Arena in his own basketball battle, his brother’s rookie feat was like a timebomb waiting to explode since arriving in the country last January.

“He’s been waiting for this day and I’m happy for him to get his moment,” said the Rain or Shine guard. “I hope he take it to keep working hard and hopefully he keeps having success.”

Growing up together in the United States, the older Ahanmisi attested to his sibling’s capacity as a lethal three-point assassin.

“He’s a shooter,” said Maverick of Jerrick’s almost perfect three-point shooting. “Ever since we were young, that’s all he does. Even he can’t reach the basket, he’s still trying to shoot from afar so I knew growing up, he’s gonna be a pretty good player.”

But the pro Ahanmisi, who chipped in 8 points, stressed he did not attempt to mirror his brother’s early accomplishment against Road Warriors.
“There’s no duplication from me trying to one up or anything,” said the Fil-Am combo guard, who will be watching Adamson’s next game against FEU.
