Jerry Codinera quick to point out slow start doomed Arellano

Jerry Codinera would like to believe that the Arellano Chiefs just got caught by the law of averages. But after almost an hour of closed-door session with his coaching staff following their disheartening 76-62 loss that snapped their 7-game win streak, Codinera had a clearer picture.

Codinera had a ready answer on what went wrong for the Chiefs in their first setback in more than month.

“We started slow,” Cordinera told FOX Sports.

Arellano managed to score only 7 points and trailed by 11 after the first frame.

“We didn’t shoot well. We can’t catch up to them,” Cordinera admitted.

The Chiefs launched repeated rallies, but failed to make up for their forgettable start as they were also consistently repelled by the Altas.  And while they managed to close the gap, 50-54, early in the final canto, they lost steam in the stretch as the Altas handed them a 20-8 finishing blow capped by Daryl Singontico to erect a comfortable 74-58 lead.

“Bad start talaga tsaka marami na ring factors” the PBA legend added.

One big factor was the way they got beaten off the boards. They got outrebounded by the Altas, 31-52 and their chemistry on the floor was lacking as they could only come up with 12 assists in contrast to Perpetual Help’s 20.

Jalalon and his backcourt partner Kent Salado had 4 each while the rest of the team could only combine for another 4.

And Codinera thought the Chiefs relaxed in this game as the 7-game win streak took a toll on them.

“Siguro, 7 win-streak na kami. Siguro, masyadong mahaba na yun,” said Codinera.

While he gave credit where it’s due, the PBA legend turned coach wants his wards to quickly move on start getting back on track.

“Lasap namin yung talo ngayon. We just need to keep on improving. Real deal talaga yun(Perpetual). Ang lakas nila, second nga sila ngayon. Look at their super import. Iba yung meron kang import tulad ni Bright (Akhuetie). It makes difference,” he concluded. – By John Bryan Ulanday
