Gary David proves worth, torments former team with conference-best game

Against the team that dropped him in the unrestricred free agent list, San Miguel streaky shooter Gary David admitted he made the most of his playing time to prove he’s still a top-caliber player.
While his falling out with Meralco is all water under the bridge now, the 38-year old veteran proved to be extra focused as he chipped in 13 points, tying his conference-best during his first encounter against his former team on Wednesday.

“Extra motivation ko na kalaban ko sila. Kaya pagpasok na pagpasok ko talagang focused ako,” said David moments after the Beermen exacted a 110-106 victory over the Bolts. “Siyempre, may dagdag talaga yun para sa akin.”

“Pinakita ko lang na kaya ko pang maglaro ng maganda at talagang binigyan din talaga ako ng time ni coach,” he added. “Nag-focus lang ako, nag-visualize lang ako na siyempre former team ko so all eyes on me.”

Often seeing limited minutes for San Miguel, the Bataan native bared he was not surprised that head coach Leo Austria gave him an extended time for him to prove his worth.

“Siyempre player din si coach so alam niya rin yung mga ganoong bagay na nararamdaman ko kaya siguro binigyan niya ako ng minutes para makapagpakita ako sa former team ko,” said the former 4-time scoring champion.

And David did not waste Austria’s trust, firing 50% from the field and going 3 out of 3 at the line in just 20 minutes that is more efficient than Beermen starting shooting guard Marcio Lassiter who just wound up with only 4 markers.

David also bared that his familiarity in Meralco’s plays somehow helped him in his breakout performance.

“Kahit papaano familiar din ako sa mga players, araw-araw ko sila kasama so alam ko rin mga galaw nila. Kahit papaano, may tulong yon para sa akin sa pagdepensa,” David said. – By Jason Mercene
