SMB survives Meralco’s late fightback on Mike Singletary’s debut

San Miguel Beermen weathered a late fightback by Meralco hacking out a 110-106 win behind Mike Singletary’s auspicious debut on Wednesday night in the 2016 PBA Governors Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Singletary, who replaced injured AZ Reid, had a triumphant return as the former Barako Bull import collected 21 points, 19 rebounds and 5 assists while the locals led by Alex Cabagnot came through in the clutch to preserve the victory.

Cabagnot finished with 18 including a clutch trey and a jumper even as June Mar Fajardo dominated the shaded lane with 24 and 10 rebounds. Arwind Santos chipped in 19, hitting crucial free throws that served as buffer in the endgame while Gary David came off the bench to torch his former team with 13 markers.

“Everybody worked hard both on offense and defense,” said SMB coach Leo Austria.

The win created a triple for the second spot with Mahindra and Brgy. Ginebra, all of them carrying 6-2 card behind league leader TNT (7-1).

It was a sorry loss for Meralco as Jimmy Alapag’s vintage performance (15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists) went down the drain.
