Jose Rizal U coach Vergel Meneses believes Heavy Bombers gunner Teytey Teodoro can make it—and even thrive—in the pro league.
But it’s up to the stocky San Juan City guard how he’ll be able to live up to his true potential and improve his individual defense.
Teodoro showcased his offensive skills anew on Tuesday night when he led JRU to a 75-68 overtime victory over defending champion Letran in the 92nd NCAA seniors basketball tourney at The Arena in San Juan City.
Underlining his status as one of the league’s top gunners, the graduating Teodoro sizzled with a game-high 23 points, eight of them coming in the extra five-minute period where he also outplayed Knights star Rey Nambatac.
Meneses, 47, a former MVP in the pro ranks back in 1995, is confident Teodoro can make it far so long as he puts in the work—day in and day out.
“Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Dumipensa ka, you’ll make it big.’ Maniwala kayo sa akin, makakapunta ng PBA ito,” he told sports scribes, with Teodoro sitting beside him.
Meneses added: “What I’ve heard, most of the coaches in the PBA, fan niya. But the problem is, ‘yung depensa. The effort is there pero kulang pa. He can go to the big league kasi ‘yung puso niya andu’n.”
Teodoro, however, admitted he’s not looking that far ahead, saying his focus remains on helping JRU reach the finals—and hopefully the Promised Land for the first time since another Heavy Bombers squad, led by pro league great Philip Cezer, made it all the way in 1972.
“Basta ang focus ko muna sa JRU. Gusto ko muna makapasok kami sa championship. Ang tagal na naming hindi nakakapasok ng championship,” said Teodoro. “‘Yun rin naman ang pinapangarap naming buong team. One game at a time lang kami.”
How far the Heavy Bombers will go this season will be determined by Teodoro, said Meneses.
“Tingin ko kung ano ‘yung ilalaro niya, ‘yun ang magde-determine kung gaano kalayo ang ilalaro namin,” he concluded. – Jerome Lagunzad
