NLEX coach Boyet Fernandez said the team is rallying behind troubled wingman Macmac Cardona, who was rushed to the hospital in Las Pinas City following a prescription pill overdose in an apparent suicide attempt on Sunday.
While Cardona’s incident came as a shock to the team, Fernandez assured the solid fans and supporters of “Captain Hook” that the veteran guard/forward is stabilizing now since being moved to Makati Medical Center.
“Management has been supportive naman kay Macmac and in fact, nalipat na nga sa siya sa Makati Med, which is under the MVP (initials of Manny V. Pangilinan) group ang hospital na yun,” Fernandez told FOX Sports on Tuesday after the team’s practice.
The soft-spoken NLEX mentor though declined to provide further details, particularly on what really happened on Cardona over the weekend.
“Alam naman ng buong team and we’re always behind Mac. Siyempre in terms of his personal life, di kami maka-comment dun, di namin alam ang situation, pero in terms of his career, suportado namin siya and sana, makabalik na rin siya, though he also has to help himself,” added Fernandez, whose team shoots for a third straight win on Wednesday when the Road Warriors clash with the Meralco Bolts.
Fernandez explained that Cardona has been in the regular lineup for the past 2 conferences. But an accident during the conference break prevented him from practicing with the team when NLEX started preparing for the Governors Cup.
After being given the go-signal to rejoin the team in practice, he complained of a heart problem, prompting the team to let the former La Salle superstar undergo a series of tests.
“When he was allowed to practice na, nag-complain siya ng heart problem, so ginawa namin, I remember at that time din yun, yun din ang time na nangyari kay Gilbert (Bulawan, who passed away on July 3) so pina-check up namin siya,” recalled Fernandez.
“In-observed siya for 2 to 3 weeks till he got all his tests and clearances. Then, nag-practice uli siya, but there were times sa practice namumutla siya, so pina-double check namin uli,” he added.
