American import Henry Walker led NLEX’s endgame surge, capped by Kevin Alas’ steal off Mahindra reinforcement James White’s fumble as the Road Warriors escaped with an 82-81 win on Wednesday in their PBA Governors Cup match at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The sweet-shooting Walker scored 8 of NLEX’s last 11 points, including a mid-range jumper with exactly 2 minutes to go to give his team an 82-79 lead, which it never relinquished.
The six-foot Alas, meantime, came off with a timely steal as the 6-foot-8 White was trying to go hard to the basket in the dying seconds, preserving NLEX’s first back-to-back wins for the conference in the process.
The Road Warriors improved to 3-3 overall, while the Enforcer, who opened the Governors Cup with a franchise-best 4 straight wins, absorbed their second straight setback.
The 28-year-old Walker scored 27 of his 39 points in the second half to lead NLEX.
Alas added 13, 4 rebounds and 3 steals, while Asi Taulava chipped in 12 rebounds and 8 points.
KG Canaleta led the Enforcer with 23 points, while White had 21 markers, 15 boards and 3 blocked shots in a losing effort. – John Bryan Ulanday
