After outlasting crowd-favorite Ginebra in a wild finish, San Miguel Beer head coach Leo Austria believes the two double overtime classic game is just a fitting treat for the PBA fans.
Over 12,000-strong supporters witnessed Sunday’s double header that both went the distance, by extra 20 minutes to be exact, to the disbelief of many.
After GlobalPort bled for their first win in 2OT over Meralco, the Beermen capped it off in the same fashion with a thrilling 111-105 victory against the Gin Kings.
“A good treat for the fans dahil the past few days it keep raining hard, but ngayon sulit yung pagpunta nila dito,” said a tired but happy Austria in the post-game interview.
It was the first time since 1992 that both games went to double overtime, according to PBA head statistician Fidel Mangonon.
But all in all, Austria just felt a sigh of relief as his wards stayed afloat despite squandering a 24-point lead in the first half.
With Ginebra unleashing a never-say-die kind of spirit in crunchtime, San Miguel just found a way to clinch their 4th win as import Arizona Reid and JuneMar Fajardo proved clutch against their sister team.
“Lahat ng players pumped up, that’s what happen. We have to give credit to these teams, talagang walang kapa-kapatid,” said Austria
While both squads not backing down against each other, the Quezon native mentor emphasized that its all part of the business.
“During games, away ito eh, pero after the game, we’re professional,” said Austria. – By Jason Mercene
