Johnedel Cardel finally registered his first win as the official head coach of GlobalPort since taking over Pido Jarencio.
With the help of active consultant Franz Pumaren, Cardel steered the Batang Pier to its first win in the Governors’ Cup after gutting out a double overtime victory over Meralco Bolts, 126-123, Sunday night.
The squad’s former assistant manager admitted it took time adjusting to the new system, but it finally paid off after losing their first 4 games.
“After a last conference, a lot of adjustments ang ginawa namin, we had a new system and ngayon lang nag-work,” said Cardel in the post-game press conference at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Cardel was relieved that his wards did not crack under pressure during the tug-of-war sequence in the extra periods against the Bolts.
GlobalPort valiantly fought for every point in the crucial stretch with import Mike Glover and star guard Terrence Romeo combining for 50 points.
But it was Fil-Aussie forward Anthony Semerad who ultimately gave the team the morale-boosting win with his game-winning trey on top of his career-high 24 markers.
Cardel could only hope that they can finally set sail to the right direction as they are still tied at the cellar with 1-4 record.
“Nagresponse na yung mga players, hopefully after winning the game, magiging comfortable na sila isat isa and sa sistema namin,” he said.
Next for GlobalPort will be a formidable San Miguel squad scheduled on Friday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. – By Jason Mercene
