The Philippine-Mighty Sports rolled to its second straight victory as it clobbered South Korea, 86-65 in the 38th William Jones Cup on Monday at the Hsinchuang Gymnasium in Taipei.
Former NLEX import Al Thornton bounced back from a quiet 5-point output on Sunday, firing 24 and adding 7 rebounds against the Koreans as PH-Mighty Sports joined Iran at the top of the standings.
From a slim 22-18 cushion at the end of first quarter, the wards of coach Bo Perasol stepped on the pedal to build a 45-31 separation at the half.
While the Koreans staged several rallies in the second half, the former Los Angeles Clippers forward always had a ready answer.
The 32-year-old Thornton’s three-point shot, followed by a three-point play later gave PH-Mighty Sports a 71-57 cushion. The PH team never looked back from there.
Sweet-shooting Zach Graham, another former PBA import who played for Air21, added 13 points while Dewarick Spencer chipped in 12 markers.
PH-Mighty Sports kicked off its William Jones Cup title campaign with an 89-81 win over host Chinese Taipei A on Sunday. Up next are the Americans, bannered by US NCAA Division I Team from Sacramento on Tuesday at 5 pm, which will be shown live on Aksyon TV. – Bryan Ulanday
