Gabe Norwood atoned for his poor conference-opening game with a sizzling shooting night from beyond the arc to spark Rain or Shine to a 106-89 demolition of injury-plagued Phoenix in their PBA Governors Cup match on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
It was a strong bounce-back game for Rain or Shine’s lockdown defender, who just 3 days ago, muffed 2 crucial foul shots in the endgame and costing the Elasto Painters a 101-98 setback against TNT.
The 6-foot-5 Norwood shot a perfect 4-out-of-4 from the rainbow country on the way to finishing with 14 points and 4 assists while wide-bodied import Dior Lowhorn led Rain or Shine with 26 markers and 14 boards.
For a while, the Fuel Masters seemed to gain momentum after riding on a blazing third quarter effort to take control, 74-69.
But Rain or Shine’s depth and resolute defense just proved too much as the Commissioner’s Cup champion outscored Phoenix, 41-15 in the final canto to register the runaway victory.
Rookie big man Norbert Torres led Phoenix with 16 points and 8 rebounds, while import Marcus Simmons was held down to just 7 points in what could probably be his last game in the PBA. – Jason Mercene
