Coming off a 40-point scoring outburts against San Sebastian Golden Stags last Tuesday, Rey Nambatac was a marked man in their stunning defeat Friday afternoon at San Juan City.
Though he was not completely handcuffed with 19 points, Perpetual Help’s suffocating defense on the Letran main gunner made him bled for every point he scored.
“Para sa akin. Maganda yung defense nila,” Nambatac revealed to Fox Sports PH after a 55-61 loss at the hands of the Perpetual Help Altas.
Nambatac struggled from the field. Though he sank four triples, he only shot 29% inside the arc and a lowly 43% from the foul line.
Nambatac insisted Letran isn’t all about him as the only important thing to him is a win.
“Pero wala naman sa akin yun na naka-40 points ako last time tapos kailangan ko nang higitan yun. Ang importante lang ay yung manalo at kung ano maitutulong ko sa team,” Nambatac lamented.
And when asked why he just had unsual touches, he reiterated he was just trying to play under Coach Jeff Napa’s system, especially in a situation where an opponent like the Altas devoted defensive schemes around him.
“Binabasa ko kasi yung depensa sa akin. Naka-focus sila sa akin so ginigive-up ko yung bola sa teammates ko. Rotate lang ng rotate,”he added.
Nambatac also didn’t buy in the ‘upset’ thing for he believed every loss was just as big and crucial to other losses.
“Talo kung talo. That’s part of the game,” he said.
And that loss will only make them better through the course of their title defense in the NCAA Season 92.
“Sa akin at sa team namin, itong pagkatalong ito yung motivation namin for next game,” Nambatac said. – By John Bryan Ulanday
