Bday boy Scottie Thompson out to prove he deserves starting role

Despite securing the green light to start from head coach Tim Cone himself, Brgy. Ginebra rookie and birthday boy Scottie Thompson won’t settle until he delivers.

For that, expect the Ginebra guard to relentlessly work double time in their preparation for the Governors’ Cup.

“Di ko lang muna iniisip, trabaho lang muna, at pakita lang sa practice nang maayos para pagdating ng Governors (Cup), magkatotoo nga na starter ako,” said Thompson, who just turned 23 on Tuesday, to FOX Sports.

Cone previously said that the former Perpetual Help guard is already ripe for the starting gig after seeing limited minutes in the past 2 conferences.

The Davao del Sur native combo guard displayed flashes of his scoring and passing ability since donning the Gin Kings jersey, but with an impending more minutes to take, he admitted it will surely boost his confidence.

“Oo naman, nakakataas ng kumpiyansa pero kailangan mo pa ring pagtrabahuhan,” said the 2015 5th pick overall.

Showing promising development, Thompson is grateful that his veteran teammates like LA Tenorio, Jayjay Helterbrand, and Mark Caguioa are more than willing to share tips to thrive in the big league.

Armed now with more knowledge of Cone’s system and potentially more playing time, will Ginebra faithfuls finally see the triple-double machine mode of Thompson, just like what he usually back in his NCAA days?

“Depende,” he stressed. “Mahirap yun, kasi iba naman sa PBA, pero expect nila na pagtratrabahuhan namin talaga bawat laban.”

Thompson and the Gin Kings will kick start their season-ending conference against GlobalPort Batang Pier on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena. – By Jason Mercene
