Jeff Javillonar’s late heroics bail out Tanduay over fast-improving Blustar

Tanduay escaped an improving Blustar Detergent side to score a pulsating 105-102 overtime win Tuesday in the 2016 PBA D-League Foundation Cup Tuesday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

Gelo Alolino topped the Rhum Masters with 25 points, six assists, and four rebounds, while JP Belencion added 20 markers and four rebounds b at joint third but it was Jeff Javillonar’s endgame heroics that sealed their 4th win to catch up with Racal (4-2).

Tanduay had a hard time disposing Blustar this time out, compared to its 94-71 victory over the Dragons last June 13.

“Siguro tumatagal na rin sila dito and kita naman sa last few games, dumidikit na rin yung mga resulta nila,” said coach Lawrence Chongson. “Iba pa rin yung nakaka-adapt na rin sila.”

Alolino pushed his side, 90-87 with 3.9 seconds left, before Juami Tiongson drained a runner three at the buzzer to force the extra period.

The former NU guard once again struck in overtime, giving Tanduay a 98-95 edge which would balloon to seven, 102-95 in the final minute courtesy of a pair of freebies from Louie Vigil.

But Blustar resisted going down without a fight, as Liaw Chee Huei and Tiongson kept the Malaysians in the running, with the latter drilling a fastbreak three to cut the deficit to just two, 102-100 with 23.4 ticks remaining.

Javillonar would split his freebies on the other end, and come up with a huge block on Wong Yi Hou’s game-tying trey as Tanduay escaped with the win.

“Sana yung mga ganitong klaseng games, makapulot kami ng mga aral,” said Chongson.

Ivan Yeo topped Blustar (1-6) with a huge double-double of 27 points and 22 rebounds, while Tiongson had 18 markers, six assists, and five boards in the close defeat.

In the first game, Rod Ebondo showed his might as he lifted Cafe France past Racal, 78-72.

The Congolese center made mincemeat of his Tile Master counterparts as he registered a double-double of 22 points and 15 rebounds, helping the Bakers’ record improve to a 5-1 slate.

“The boys played good defense. Racal is a very good offensive team, but maganda ang nilaro ng mga bata and they cannot stop Ebondo,” said coach Egay Macaraya, as Cafe France ended Racal’s three-game winning streak.

The Bakers also clamped down on defense, limiting the Tile Masters, to just 72 points, far off from their average of 99.8 points per game.

Mon Abundo chipped in 16 markers and four boards, while Carl Bryan Cruz had 13 points before being ejected for elbowing Dexter Maiquez at the 5:41 mark of the third quarter.

Cafe France held a 75-65 lead with 1:41 remaining courtesy of an Aaron Jeruta basket, but Racal stayed in the game and sliced the deficit to just three, 75-72 after a Chris Javier jumper with 55.0 seconds left.

Former Tile Master Mike Parala, however, saved the day for the Bakers as he nailed a banking jumper to push his team up, 77-72 with 18.3 seconds left.

Jonathan Grey carried Racal (4-2) with 12 points, two rebounds, and two assists, while Philip Paniamogan had 11 markers in the defeat.
