Allwell Orame and Carlos Isit delivered clutch plays as the Mapua Cardinals escaped with a pulsating 74-71 victory over Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers Saturday night at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City.
Oraeme pumped in a monster double-double of 24 points and 17 boards while Isit put on a 17-point, 5-rebound, 2-assist in their victory.
Mapua, which trailed by as many as 10 points, tightened up on defense limiting JRU to only a basket after being stuck at 69 points for almost 7 minutes. The Cardinals capitalized on the Heavy Bombers’ misfiring with a short stab from Oraeme giving them a 4-point cushion, 73-69, in the last 2 minutes.
Andrew Estrella broke JRU’s silence as they inched within 2 with still 37 ticks remaining but it proved to be their last stand.
The Heavy Bombers blew a golden chance to steal the lead when Teytey Teodoro fired blank following a backcourt violation by Mapua. An Isit split from the foul line with still 7 seconds to go gave JRU a chance to send the game into overtime but Paolo Pontejos muffed a desperation trey.
Pontejos spearheaded Bombers offense with 16 points and Teodoro chipped in 13 in a losing effort. – By Bryan John Ulanday
