NLEX Road Warriors remain hopeful that veteran slotman Asi Taulava will recover just in time to lead their PBA Governors’ Cup campaign this July.
Still in need to undergo therapy sessions, Taulava missed NLEX’s 83-77 win over a depleted Tropang TNT in a tune-up game during the PBA Campus Tour at Arellano Gym – Pasig, Friday afternoon.
“We are hoping Asi will be 1OO% ready,” head coach Boyet Fernandez told FOX Sports.
At 43, ‘The Rock’ remains to be ‘ageless’ as he kept posting decent numbers while being the Road Warriors’ vocal leader these past conferences. Last conference, he averaged 11.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists.
Taking advantage of the long break, the Fil-Tongan banger went under the knife last May to clean his ligaments on his knees, a preventive action to address swollenness that hampered him in the last Commissioner’s Cup.
“He’s going back on Sunday, therapy na agad ulit so hopefully he will be 100% on July 15,” shared Fernandez, who has been talking to Taulava everyday since he flew to the United States with his family for a short vacation.
But for now, Fernandez’s concern is pushing the Road Warriors on improving as a cohesive unit after they encountered a gallant stand from the undermanned TNT in their recent game.
Despite missing Taulava and Sean Anthony, who suffered from a sprained ankle, the close fight was no excuse to the coach with the Tropang Texters playing without Gilas stars Jayson Castro, Ryan Reyes and Troy Rosario.
“Even though they don’t have some players, still, they are fighting. Kakabahan kami ngayon kasi konti lang lamang ng TNT sa amin kahit konti lang sila,” said Fernandez. “It will be a tough situation for us kasi di ko pa nakikita maglaro yung iba sa kanila.” – By Jason Mercene
