Still on his road to recovery, Jeff Chan had the chance to observe what’s still to improve on Gilas Pilipinas offense in their tune-up game against Iran in Smart-Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.
As per coach Tab Baldwin’s instruction, the Rain or Shine gunner did not see action in their last game before the Gilas leaves for their Europe training camp as he is still recovering from his groin injury.
“Sabi niya dahan-dahan tayo, kasi papunta sa 100% tapos biglang mag 0, so panget gusto niya 100% na,” said Chan to FOX Sports.
Chan was satisfied, though, on how things turned out on most parts of the game with his teammates able to survive their Asian arch-rival, 81-70 but rues the near endgame meltdown that surrendered their comfortable lead.
“Ang ganda, yung huli na lang, siguro yung ball movement doon lang kinulang kaya medyo forced shots, pag nagdridrive nate-turnover pero magagawan ng paraan yun,” said Chan.
“Medyo (nawala) lang kami sa zone kasi di pa namin talaga napa-polish yung zone offense namin, pero during the timeout, may mga plays naman si coach and happy siya kasi ginawa naman,” he added.
With Baldwin missing the services of his 2 clutch shooters in Chan and Marcio Lassiter, who is still down with bronchitis, Gilas leaned on the heroics of Andray Blatche, LA Tenorio, and Ray Parks at the endgame to seal the win.
“Puwedeng o puwede hindi, di natin alam kasi depende naman talaga sa game yan, pero I know makakatulong kaming dalawa,” answered Chan when asked if he and Lassiter could’ve widened the lead should they were able to play.
Despite knowing that he won’t suit up, Chan even went early in the event to do shooting and strengthening drills, proving he is nearing 100%.
“Nasa 70% na, so nagdridrills na ako. Siguro mga 2-3 days okay na ako,” he said. – By Jason Mercene
