As the first major decision of his collegiate career failed to pan out, Hubert Cani searches for answers as he moves to his next destination.
After a controversial stint with Ateneo, the former high school superstar has left the Loyola campus after failing to meet the school’s academic standards heading into UAAP Season 79.
“Nag-iisip muna kami kung saan maganda ngayon,” Cani, who, just a couple of years ago, was the toast of the UAAP juniors tournament, told FOX Sports.
Playing out of shape after being allowed to suit up for the Blue Eagles at the last minute in 2015, the ex-NU Bullpup averaged more turnovers and fouls than points in assists in 6 minutes per game for Ateneo.
And now that his Blue and White chapter is officially over, Cani said he doesn’t have any regrets about choosing Katipunan over the comforts of Sampaloc.
“Choice namin ng family yun e,” he stressed. “Dream school ko naman yun so at least nakapag-try ako sa Ateneo kahit 2 years.”
Cani said all options are on the table, including returning to the Bulldogs, joining his high school coach, Jeff Napa, at Letran, or even playing for another contender in the UAAP or the NCAA.
After all, a player like him — armed with the right mindset, attitude and conditioning — can put a strong team over the hump and into a championship.
Right now, however, all he can do is learn from the mistakes of the past and move on.
“Hindi ko naman siya titignan as negative,” he shared. “Siguro challenge lang ito sa amin. Then kailangan ko lang patunayan kung ano yung worth ko bilang player.” — By Josiah Albelda
