In the short period of time Barangay Ginebra guard LA Tenorio has been with GlobalPort young star Terrence Romeo at the Gilas Pilipinas pool, he could easily see the latter’s potential to dominate Philippine basketball.
Tenorio said he’s in awe with the former Far Eastern University combo guard’s individual skills.
In fact, the veteran Ginebra point guard went as far as saying Romeo could easily develop into an unstoppable, take-charge-guy, much like in the mold of Oklahoma City Thunder’s star playmaker Russell Westbrook.
“Ngayon fino-focus ko na turuan ko si Terrence. Nakakatuwang turuan yung bata dahil kapag handling the ball, pagkuha ng bola, wala, unstoppable siya,” Tenorio told FOX Sports after Gilas’ practice.
The veteran Ginebra court general said in terms of sheer individual skills, it would be hard to top what Romeo can do at this point. But then again, one key aspect he’s been teaching the reigning PBA Most Improved Player is how to become a better point guard.
“Kapag wala sa kanya ang bola, that’s the time tinuruan ko siya, kasi converted to one siya eh kaya mahirap for him,” explained the 31-year-old Ginebra sentinel.
While Romeo still has to learn to acquire the mentality of a pure point guard, Tenorio is confident that in time, the 24-year-old GlobalPort superstar will get it.
“Marami pang kailangan matutunan talaga si Terrence playing off the ball and playing the point guard position, pero kung matutunan niya iyan, grabe iyan, unstoppable iyan, magging parang Westbrook iyan,” Tenorio boldly declared.
The 5-foot-10 Romeo debuted in the international basketball scene with Gilas.
He wowed the Taiwanese and the sizeable Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in Taiwan last year during the William Jones Cup as he showed his ability to score and break down the opposing team’s defense with his dribbling skills and quickness.
Tenorio understands he won’t be playing for Gilas forever.
No wonder, he’s patiently downloading everything he has learned in his 10-year pro career to Romeo as he prepares the GlobalPort star for the future.
“All throughout his career, scorer siya eh, so siguro, kailangan as a point guard, sinasabi ko sa kanya na threat ka na eh. Kaya once na nakita mo na threat ka na, make sure na i-distribute mo muna ang bola,” he said.
“Kasi in any given time, kaya mo kunin yung bola saka puwede mo kunin at itira, pero as point guard, pasayahin mo muna lahat ng mga iyan because in the end, ikaw ang magiging masaya kasi pag nakatira na silang lahat at walang nangyari, ikaw na ang (scoring) option,” added the 1-time PBA Best Player awardee.
Tenorio though has one word of caution after his recent chat with Romeo in Gilas practice.
“Isa lang sinabi ko sa kanya. Kapag magkalaban tayo (in the PBA), huwag mo gagawin iyan (what he has taught him) sa akin,” Tenorio said, before breaking into a hearty laugh. – By Richard Dy
