Jumbo Plastic’s Jeff Viernes says ‘heart’ will determine PCBL kings

The heavyweight showdown between Mighty Sports and Jumbo Plastic will boil down to one final game and Jeff Viernes knows the squad who is more hungrier will win it all on Friday.

Playing with a no-tomorrow attitude, the dimunitive guard flashed nerves of steel in pulling off gutsy moves and firing 31 big points to keep the Linoleum Giants afloat and kicking in Game 2 of the PCBL Chairman’s Cup Finals Wednesday at the Marikina Sports Complex.

Alongside backcourt partner James Martinez, who also had 31 markers of his own, Viernes provided the spark late in the overtime to deny Mighty of a sweep and the championship.

“Kahit anong pagod talagang kailangan ipanalo,” Viernes told FOX Sports. “Iniisip ko na lang walang bigs, ginagawa ko naman kahit papaano (dumiskarte).”

The 5-foot-7 guard, who turned 27 last May 18, stood tallest as he kept on finding ways to score even when newly-minted MVP Kiefer Ravena and the rest of Mighty Sports came charging late in the fourth quarter.

“Nagkaroon kami ng momentum (sa dulo), maganda at least may Game 3 pa, so kailangan namin ulit makipagpukpukan,” he said.

But despite his stellar performance, the do-it-all guard wants to stay determined against their opponents.

“Hindi mo pwedeng masabi kung anong mangyayari na kung sino gustong manalo, yun talaga mananalo,” he said. — By Jason Mercene
