Back on the winning track, Letran head coach Jeff Napa emphasized that he has a big trust on his new wards in continuing the Knights’ identity on the hardcourt.
“Kung ano mang nawala sa amin, alam kong kaya nilang punan yun basta yung effort todo bigay nila,” said Napa, following their
character-building win over University of the East in, 105-99, in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup on Saturday.
“Lagi kong ine-emphasize sa kanila na maniwala sa system tsaka yung disiplina so right now, pinakita nila na naniniwala sila,” added the former champion coach for NU Bullpups.
Big man Jom Sollano and spitfire guard Rey Nambatac, who combined for 44 points, led other 3 players in double digits as Letran bounce back in the preseason tourney after absorbing back-to-back losses.
Anchored by their unforgiving defense, the reigning NCAA defending champion managed to turn the game around after being down by as much as 20 points in the first quarter and frustrate the Red Warriors in the dying minutes –to Napa’s delight.
“Yun yung bread and butter (defense), kaya enjoy ako hawakan yung mga ito kasi lahat sila nagsisimula sa defense,” said Napa.
Aware that other teams are targeting Letran’s adjustment period with the loss of key players and under his system, Napa is impressed on how his boys responded against the tide.
“Naintindihan ko naman sila kasi proseso itong ginagawa namin so may mga bagay kaming talaga ginagawa sa practice na sobrang hirap pero inspite of that, gumagawa sila ng paraan para maglaro at their best,” he closed. – By Jason Mercene
