Hardworking Alaska forward Calvin Abueva finally earned the recognition he long deserves after bagging the Nice Day Coffee-Best Player award for the Oppo-PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Friday.
Nicknamed the “Beast”, the 6-foot-1 Alaska wingman was the hands-down choice after compiling 1150 total statistical points to earn his very first Best Player award as a pro.
Barangay Ginebra slotman Greg Slaughter, who led the statistical points through the end of the semifinals, settled for the runner-up finish in the Best Player award with his 752 total SPs.
Abueva’s total points breakdown includes 413 statistical points, 493 votes from media, 94 votes from the players and 150 from the Commissioner’s Office.
The former PBA Rookie of the Year is averaging a league career-high 17.18 points, along with 7.59 rebounds and 2.81 assists in the conference to tow the Aces to the PBA Finals for 3rd straight time.
Alaska though has a mountain to climb after falling into a 0-3 hole.
Meantime, the 5-foot-10 Romeo came in third in the balloting with 488 total SPs.
Tropang TNT combo guard Jayson Castro is at fourth (482) wile Blackwater’s vastly-improved guard Carlo Lastimosa had 382. – By Richard Dy
