After claiming his first victory for his alma mater, UP head coach Bo Perasol believes the Fighting Maroons can bring the fight to any teams with the right mindset.
“It’s been a long time that we are thinking that we can’t but I truly know that we can,”said Perasol, moments after he steered the Fighting Maroons to their first preseason win as they toppled Season 78 champs FEU Tamaraws, 67-61, on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
“What’s important is that we understand that we can compete with anybody,” stressed Perasol, who scored his monumental initial win in just his second game calling the shots for the Maroons.
With the win, UP also snapped its losing curse to FEU, which lasted for at least half a decade or since UAAP Season 74.
“This is big for us although we all know that this is just one game but this is big for our mindset,” said Perasol, visibly pleased on the energy of his wards throughout the game.
Banking on total team defensive effort and balance scoring, the Maroons were able to protect their lead in the last three quarters against a struggling Tamaraws side with former Batang Gilas standout Paul Desiderio and Dave Moralde leading the way with 14 apiece.
Although still in the process of organizing Diliman squad to the direction he wants to take, Perasol shared that this early feat is ‘a reward for their effort’ and can help them move forward.
“That’s good for us, I hope we can continue in this kind of mindset and I’m happy the guys responded with lots of belief and lots of energy,” he said. “Kung may panalo, at least natutuwa ka na mayroon resulta, that’s the change na what I wanted them to understand.” – By Jason Mercene
