Seizing every opportunity given to him by his coaches and teammates, fit-again big man Kris Porter flashed a glimpse of his versatility in his second game back for the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
Porter, who suffered a knee injury last season, towed the Blue Eagles in their first win in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup over Adamson, 84-75 on Friday.
“I’m still adjusting, I’ve been gone for a while. It’s good that my teammates challenged me in practice,” said Porter, who posted a balance statsline of 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists in just 22 minutes.
But Porter gave the credit to his teammates, mostly composed of sophomores and newcomers, for his all-around performance.
“It’s all part of the system. I’m just happy we’re able to run the system,” said the 6-foot-5 power forward.
Once a Mythical 5 selection during his high school days, Porter took a step back in his rookie year in seniors with Ateneo already loaded at frontcourt back in Season 77.
By the time he was ready to make a splash in Season 78, his knee injury got in the way. But with Ateneo losing some of its stars in 2-time MVP Kiefer Ravena and sharpshooter Von Pessumal, Porter is looking to be an offensive option for team consultant Tab Baldwin.
“He’s one of our dependable bigs, he’s got a good post-up game, good outside shot, those 3 point shots is nothing new to us,” said assistant coach Sandy Arespacochaga, who called the shots against Adamson as Baldwin left before the game for his Gilas commitment.
“The good thing with Porter and the other bigs are working hard and pushing together,” added Arespacochaga. “Hopefully, pagdating sa UAAP sabay-sabay but we’re looking forward for more consistency from Porter and our bigs.” – By Jason Mercene
