Losing its grip in their previous game due to a late game meltdown, Calvin Abueva and the Aces showed they are back in the business in their Game 3 win as they handed Meralco one of its worst losses –a 20 point blowout– of the mid-season conference.
Abueva spearheaded a full 48-minute assault both on the offensive and defensive end against the Bolts, something they failed to do in Game 2 where they lost a heartbreaking decision despite leading in the 4th quarter.
“Nag-relax kami, inaamin namin yun, talagang sinabi namin na down by 14 panalo na, yun pala mali pala kaya ngayon game 3 kahit up kami by double digit talagang inangat pa namin para wala nang habol pagdating ng endgame,” said Abueva on their mentality now in the series.
Abueva, the frontrunner for Best Player of the Conference plum, delivered the goods for Alaska with his usual attacking mode after collecting 23 points and 12 rebounds to inch closer for another Finals appearance, its 4th in the last 5 titular duel.
But the ‘Beast’ shrugged off another stellar performance as he looked to carry the Aces for a shot at redemption this conference after their recent Philippine Cup nightmare.
“Ganun talaga yung average natin pero siyempre hindi basta-basta na kahit double-double yung average mo, if natalo yung team wala rin di ba,” he said. “Iniintindi ko yung manalo yung team kaysa sa mga points na mga nakukuha ko.”
Despite a 2-day off, the former San Sebastian standout vows to continue playing with their killer instinct come Game 4 to finally slay the second seed Meralco.
“Talagang di kami pwedeng mag-relax sa next game namin. Sa Game 4 kasi 2 days pahinga to, makakarecover yung mga yan kaya pupursugihin namin na mas (gumanda) yung depensa namin,” he said. – By Jason Mercene
