La Salle ushers in Aldin Ayo era with win over ex-coach Franz Pumaren

A new look De La Salle Green Archers weathered a gritty Adamson Soaring Falcons squad, 98-88 in the season opener of FilOil Pre-Season Primier Cup Saturday noon at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan City.

Bannered by Jeron Teng and his new partner in crime, Ben Mbala with former Letran Coach Aldrin Ayo at the helm, the Green Archers found their groove late in the game to spoil former La Salle coach Franz Pumaren in his coaching debut with the Soaring Falcons.

Teng waxed hot with 30 points and 3 assists while Mbala collected 13 points, 10 boards, 5 assists and 2 blocked shots. Gboy Gob put up 20 points and 7 rebounds for the Taft-based squad.

Five players scored in double figures for the Soaring Falcons speaheaded by Sean Mangati’s 13 points while Robbie Manalang and Terrence Mustre added 11 apiece.

The technical foul on Ayo in the third quarter with DLSU up by a slim 61-59 lead fired up the Archers and went on 26-14 run that gave them some breather 87-73 in the dying minutes of 4th quarter.

Though the Soaring Falcons retaliated with a back-to-back trey to inch closer at 87-79, time was not on their side as the Green Archers ran away with the debut win.

La Salle opened the game with a 12-0 blast but Adu tigtened up on defense to close the gap at 46-43 entering the break.
