Euro-Med stuns fancied Mighty Sports

Games Friday

(Marikina Sports Center)
5 p.m. – Supremo Lex vs Foton
7 p.m. – Euro-Med vs Biyaheng SCTEX

Facing its biggest game yet in the PCBL Chairman’s Cup, Euro-Med preserved its best against new powerhouse team Mighty Sports and pulled off an inspiring 87-73 triumph on Wednesday at the Marikina Sports Center.

It was the sixth win in 11 games for Euro-Med, which kept its hopes alive for a top two berth that would give them an automatic seat in the semifinal round. The team is currently half a game behind third placer Biyaheng SCTEX (6-4) and second running Jumbo Plastic (7-4), which demolished an import-less Supremo Lex, 75-46, in the other game.

Already assured of the No.1 spot in the semifinal round, Mighty Sports played without Kiefer Ravena, who is set to leave for the US for another series of training. Despite his absence, the team engaged Euro-Med in an exciting, highly-physical encounter.

Ex-pro Eloy Poligrates led the way with 23 points as his timely baskets repulsed repeated uprising by Mighty Sports. Ola Adeogun had a double-double performance of 21 points and 14 rebounds although he had to be reminded by head coach Yong Garcia to keep his emotions in check.

Jeff Tajonora came off the bench and contributed 10 markers, including three triples as Euro-Med became the only team to deal Mighty Sports a sound beating in this tournament supported by Ambucore, LGR, Hahn Manila, Gerry’s Grill, During’s Barbeque and Restaurant, and Spalding.

It was only the second loss of Mighty Sports in 11 games. The team also lost to Jumbo Plastic in the early goings of the second round.

Euro-Med had to fight back from a 38-27 deficit as Poligrates sparked a 13-0 run by his team to turn things around and settle a 47-45 lead at the half.

Back-to-back treys by former San Mig Coffee guard Lester Alvarez and inside baskets by Adeogun triggerd Euro-Med’s 15-0 blast and led the team’s breakaway, 62-45. The team was never seriously threatened from there.
