Hometown favorite Mighty Sports and Biyaheng SCTEX carved out a pair of contrasting on Sunday in the 2016 PCBL Chairman’s Cup at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center in Bulacan.

Top pro league prospect Kiefer Ravena and prized import Bright Akhuetie took charge anew as Mighty Sports survived Sta. Lucia 92-85 for its ninth win in 10 games, formally securing the top seed in the playoffs of the fledging inter-commercial tourney supported by Spalding, Hahn Manila, LGR, During’s Barbeque and Restaurant, Ambucore and Gerry’s Grill .

Ravena tallied a team-high 20 points, including a clutch trey that highlighted a decisive seven-to-nothing run for a 92-83 lead with only 1:18 left, while the 6-foot-8 Akhuetie muscled his way to another double-double performance of 17 markers and 20 rebounds.

Sharing the day’s spotlight with Mighty Sports was Biyaheng SCTEX, which cruised to a 91-60 victory over Foton for its sixth win in 10 matches, gaining a share of second spot with Jumbo Plastic.

Jett Vidal waxed hot from beyond the arc, nailing five of his seven attempts for a 20-point output while Jam Jamito had another double-double showing with 12 points and 13 boards but the Realtors still suffered their sixth loss in 11 matches, slipping to fifth spot.

Hastening Sta. Lucia’s downfall was the lackluster debut outing of new import Ik Akpuru, who took over the spot from injured Prince Eze but struggled for just three points in 10 minutes, still lost in how the Realtors ran their patterns.

Byron Villarias led the Biyaheng SCTEX’s balanced attack with 18 points, spiked by four triples, while Mark Pangilinan scored 15 markers, Raul Soyud had 12, Borgie Hermida chipped in 11 and import Steve Akomo produced a double-double performance of 10 points and 15 boards. – By Jerome Lagunzad
