A familiar face initially stands in the way of powerhouse La Salle when the Green Archers open the 2016 FilOil-Flying V Pre-Season Premier Cup against the restocked Adamson U Soaring Falcons on April 30 at the FilOil-Flying V Center in San Juan.
The Green Archers, now handled by former Letran mentor Aldin Ayo, will kick-off the hostilities of the prestigious summer cage meet at 2 p.m. against the Soaring Falcons, who have also a new coach in Franz Pumaren.
Considered as one of the most successful coaches in the collegiate ranks, Pumaren, 52, previously called the shots for La Salle in a decorated 12-year span, leading the school to five UAAP men’s cage titles, including a ‘four-peat’ from 1998-2001.
He has amassed an impressive 86-26 win-loss record with La Salle.
Clashing in the other seniors match on the opening day set at 4 p.m. are University of the East and Ateneo.
The 6 p.m. showdown between San Beda College and Ateneo in the juniors’ division complete the blockbuster triple-header in the opener.
The organizers have also penciled an explosive pair of seniors matches on the final day of eliminations on June 4, with reigning NCAA champion Letran renewing its rivalry with dethroned titlist San Beda at 2 p.m. followed by the much-awaited showdown between arch-nemesis Ateneo and La Salle. – By Jerome Lagunzad
