It appears that there is more to Meralco’s woes after the Bolts slumped to their second straight loss, a 104-99 meltdown against sister team NLEX on Friday night.
Former Gilas player and league scoring champion Gary David aired his frustration over his dwindling playing time in the midst of the Bolts’ losing streak.
David played a conference-low 7 minutes and 11 seconds missing his only attempt but issued 3 assists in the opening half where the Bolts led by as many as 8 points.
David insisted he’s okay despite suffering a mild sprained ankle injury in Meralco’s loss to San Miguel Beer in Legazpi last Saturday.
“Maganda naman ‘yung takbo ko eh. Wala, siyempre coach’s decision ‘yan. Talagang bumababa na ‘yung playing time ko, baka ini-improve nila si (Chris) Newsome,” said David referring to their rookie, who took over his spot in the starting unit.
“Walang problema basta’t nananalo. Kahit hindi ka ginagamit, okay lang kaya lang siyempre, pag natatalo may problema na yan,” added the 37-year old veteran.
A 5-time PBA All Star and 4-time scoring champion, David saw his minutes and consequently his scoring goes down this conference. He is just averaging 7.7 points on 36 percent shooting this conference, his lowest since his rookie year. While the Bolts appear to be leaning towards youth movement, David just wants to be clear with his role.
“Hinihintay ko na kausapin ako pero wala eh. So basta kung palalaruin ako, be ready lang lagi. Kung hindi, support na lang,” said the 2014 All Star MVP.
“I’ll just keep playing. I’ve been in the league for 12 years, tingnan natin kung ano ang mangyayari. Baka may plano sila, baka wala silang kumpyansa sa akin,” added David.
While a PBA title remains elusive for David, who came close to winning with Powerade a few years back, he is hoping to get one before he’s done. His contract will expire at the season’s end and it looks like David will switch uniform soon.
“Si boss Danny (Espiritu), ‘yung manager ko, na ang bahalang makipag-usap. Basta ako gagawin ko pa rin ang trabaho ko, kung ano ang nakasaad sa kontrata ko,” David said. – By AA
