UPIS star Javi Gomez de Liaño could be headed for Ateneo, UST

Nothing’s set in stone yet, but UP Integrated School’s Javi Gomez de Liaño might not don the Fighting Maroons’ jersey in college.

After making the Mythical Team of the UAAP Season 78 juniors basketball tournament, the graduating Gomez de Liaño is seriously considering taking his talent to either UST or Ateneo next season as UP failed to show interest for the highly-touted recruit.

“Kuya ko nasa UST na, team B, so they also invited me before to train. UST is okay, tapos sa Ateneo naman they’re inviting me to train kasi I already tried out before but no offers yet,” Gomez de Liaño told FOX Sports.

With the 2 UAAP schools in the running to get the service of the 6-foot-6 swingman, Gomez de Liaño is taking his time before committing on his future.

“I can’t say it, di ko pa alam. Pareho eh, pero it’s my top 2 (choice),” he said.

This will be a big blow for the rebuilding senior UP squad as the older Gomez de Liaño was the most productive and consistent Junior Maroons the past 2 seasons.

“I trained with UP already but I don’t know if they are interested,” he revealed. “I’m also from UP so if they wanted me to stay in UP they should’ve offered me already.”

After strongly ending his high school career by making the Mythical Team with his brother Juan, he knows that he needs to improve his game to measure up in the college level.

“Entering the senior level, I have to bulk up, I have to improve my game, my speed, my shooting, and ball handling,” said Gomez de Liaño, who also received an invite from St. Benilde.

Despite potentially leaving Diliman in his senior career, Javi is positive that UPIS will be a threat come next season with his brother leading the pack.

“One thing’s for sure, I know we will be a stronger team, everything there will be better. My brother is ready to lead the team so we already to know what we will work on, we already know our mistakes so hopefully we get better next year,” he shared while also revealing that another Gomez de Liaño will suit up for UPIS next season. — By Jason Mercene
