NLEX steadied down the stretch and survived Star’s late fightback, hacking out a 106-99 victory Saturday in the Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Alonte Sports Center in Binan, Laguna.
Kevin Alas and import Al Thornton delivered key baskets down the stretch to fend off the Hotshots’ late fightback.
Alas and Thornton’s late game heroics preserved Garvo Lanete’s career game.
Lanete came off the bench to explode for a career-high 21 points helping the Road Warriors to their second win in three starts.
Denzel Bowles scored Star’s last eight points, finishing with 30 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists but still not enough to save the Hotshots from falling to 0-3 start.
Thornton had 35 points and 10 rebounds while Asi Taulava chipped in a double-double with 14 and 12 while Jonas Villabueva and Alas added in 12 and 10 points, respectively.
PJ Simon and Allein Maliksi led the Star’s locals with 21 points apiece while James Yap came off the bench to contribute 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting.
