Red Sox too strong for Orioles, Cubs down Reds

The Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 on Monday night to extend their lead in the American League East to four games.

Rick Porcello tossed his third complete game, while David Ortiz and Mookie Betts crushed two-run homers, Mark Trumbo hit an RBI double and Adam Jones also went deep for the visitors at Camden Yards.

Jason Hammel pitched seven solid innings and Dexter Fowler hit a tie-breaking two-out RBI single in the seventh to help the Chicago Cubs overcome the Cincinnati Reds 5-2 at Wrigley Field.

The New York Mets‘ wild-card push stalled as they went down 7-3 against Atlanta. Freddie Freeman had four hits and three RBI for the Braves, who remained bottom of the National League.

NL East-leading Washington suffered a 4-3 loss to Miami, Giancarlo Stanton notching a big early home run for the Marlins. The Nationals nevertheless cut their magic number for securing the title to five due to the Mets’ defeat.

The Texas Rangers edged closer to the AL West crown with a 3-2 triumph over the last-placed Los Angeles Angels, while the second-placed Seattle Mariners lost 3-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays.

The NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers toppled the San Francisco Giants 2-1, and the Kansas City Royals kept alive their slim play-off hopes by beating the Chicago White Sox 8-3 for their third straight victory.

In other games, the St Louis Cardinals were 5-3 winners against the Colorado Rockies, the Houston Astros rallied for a 4-2 success against the Oakland Athletics and the San Diego Padres squeezed past the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2.
